Friends of MYC and the Salesians

The Friends of Manzini Youth Care project is a new initiative in 2006. Over the years we have had many volunteers, family members and friends come through Swaziland and visit many of the projects and spend time with the boys in our care. These people have all left, touched by their experience and inspired to try and do something to help.

This project tries to capture and retain this enthusiasm, as well as spread the word of our work to friends and family members of those that have spent time with us. With the strong international focus currently on Africa , people are becoming aware of the plight of Africans especially in the face of HIV/Aids. At the same time there is increasing scepticism about where donated money goes to, how much is spent of administration and how much reaches the end recipient. People want to receive updates on how their money is spent, but not necessarily monthly glossy brochures.

So several past volunteers have decided to registered Manzini Youth Care as an official charity within Ireland and soon after within England. Bank accounts have been opened in both countries and a board of Directors have been appointed to oversee this MYC charity in these countries.

The idea is to encourage people to consider regularly contributing to MYC rather than the larger, more administrative intensive organisations. The advantages of becoming a 'friend of Manzini Youth Care' include:

  • You are generally only one step removed from someone that has actually spent time volunteering with MYC and can therefore verify the work that is being undertaken
  • MYC admin costs are extremely low. More than 95% of the contribution goes directly to the programmes
  • MYC commits to keep contributors informed on a regular basis, but will do so in a cost effective manner
  • MYC would encourage and welcome any contributor to Swaziland and would love to show them exactly where their money is being spent. We are still a small organisation, and this is a small donor programme so there is individual concern that your money be spent carefully.

People are encouraged to donate on a monthly basis via a bank order. All money goes into the Irish or English accounts and every quarter the money is transferred in bulk through to Swaziland . This keeps bank fees to a minimum.
