fairly traded

People want to be sure that the products they are buying have been ethically produced in compliance with well established codes of practice that ensure certain environmental, labour and other ethical considerations have been adhered to, to promote sustainable development and greater social justice through trade.  Importers require their producers and suppliers to regularly provide detailed information on the supply chain used to manufacture or create their products. This ensures they comply with the criteria and rules established by organizations specializing in fairly traded products.

Generally information is supplied on the local economy, employment conditions and wages of employees, administration, accounts and operational sustainability of the organization.  The information is regularly verified by the organisation’s representatives visiting the producer and performing an audit.  Audits are usually conducted through personal interviews with individuals at each point of the supply chain in the producing country, and by questionnaires supplied to the producer with each order.   This detailed auditing process ensures the integrity of the philosophy and practice of ethical consumerism.  Contact organizations promoting fairly traded products to find out more about their codes of practice.

Eswatini Swazi Kitchen has yearly audits by various ethical consumer organizations to ensure our products meet their criteria.  Contact IFAT (International Federation for Alternative Trade (www.ifat.org) for further information on ethical consumerism, or check the websites of other organizations in your country.
